Kisite-Mpunguti Marine National Park is a protected marine area located on the south coast of Kenya, near the Tanzanian border. It encompasses a small coral reef around Kisite Island and the larger Mpunguti Reserve, creating a sanctuary for incredible marine biodiversity.
The park covers 39 square kilometers of pristine ocean and is renowned for its clear turquoise waters, spectacular coral gardens, and abundant marine life. No, you don't need to be a swimmer to enjoy the park. Life jackets are provided for all water activities, and you can still enjoy the dhow ride, dolphin watching, and the beautiful scenery. For snorkeling, our guides provide flotation devices and personal assistance to non-swimmers.
The best time to visit is during the dry seasons from December to March and July to October when the sea is calmer and visibility for snorkeling is at its best. However, the park can be enjoyed year-round, with dolphin sightings being common throughout the year.
Essentials include: swimwear, sunscreen (reef-safe recommended), hat, sunglasses, towel, change of clothes, waterproof camera or phone case, motion sickness medication if prone to seasickness, and cash for optional purchases or tips.
Dolphin sightings are very common in Kisite-Mpunguti, with success rates estimated at over 80%. The park is home to resident pods of bottlenose dolphins and seasonal visits by humpback dolphins. While we can't guarantee sightings, they are a regular and thrilling part of most visits.
Kisite Island itself is uninhabited with no permanent facilities to preserve its natural state. However, nearby Wasini Island has basic facilities including restaurants and restrooms. Our day trips include comfortable seating areas, shaded sections on the dhows, and all necessary equipment for a comfortable experience.
